Mass of Perdition
Ordalie
From Bandcamp, "ORDALIE's first album (2023), inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and the literary philosophy of cosmicism. Their music and lyrics emphasize the insignificance of humanity and its doings in the face of an indifferent universe and the coldness of the eternal dark space." The album has seven songs.
"Projection" is the first. It's a short intro, consisting of deep, cavernous sounds, along with harrowing qualities. "Monotony of the Eternal Void" by contrast is the longest on the album. The song opens with a big sounds in your face, from lightning fast drums, a wall of guitars, and some vocal screams. Approaching the half-way mark, there is a slow down, with desperate tones. The chaotic sound returns with a vengeance, taking the song to completion. "Resurrection" is another heavy, chaotic song with a lot of the holes filled in. The drums might be the instrument you can hear the most, with constant cymbal crashes and machine-gun snare drumming. Besides this, the music isn't anything overly original.
"Cyclopean Wanderings" begins with cold winds, and solemn clean guitars. From there, it's steady vocal screams that take over the song, without any drumming. The sound is harrowing but repetitive. "Destroyers" is another fast and furious song, fueled with charged riffs and drums, and held vocal screams. Some clean vocal chants mix in as well. The title track features deeper vocals but the drums and guitars still dominate the sound. The sounds changes a couple times, keeping the listener on their toes. "Endless" closes the album; another short and harrowing instrumental. Cold winds whip in the distance over a bed of clean guitars. Evil lurks everywhere around you.
Overall, this was a good album that overcame some FWOBM heavy influence, with shifting sounds, changing chords, and some well-placed instrumentals. The songwriter coaxed as many different sounds that he could, resulting in a balanced album for the most part. As is often the case, the harrowing elements stood out most for me.
