Oratory - Inner Pyre album cover

ORATORY is a somewhat new Sludge metal band from Brisbane, Australia. Formed in 2019, they released a nine-song demo called Dreamstate Supreme in 2020. The music is stated as being very groovy and riff filled with the lyrics tackling many different topics from inner suffering and perseverance to dilemmas within society. This will be their first EP as they try to make a name for themselves in the Australian music scene.

The EP starts off with the track "Capitulation Genuflect" and the song is very catchy with a few cool hooks to keep you interested in the song the whole way. It starts off with a darker and doom-like resistance, as a very fitting little guitar riff is put in place. The pace is increased as the drum and bass tremble the song along. Vocals are a faded harsh howl in the background behind the force that is created by the instruments. A good opening song with a lot of melody to introduce the release. The second track "Inner Pyre" hits a little heavier and has a heavy punk flow at times that is driven by crunchy guitars. The vocals come to the forefront more on this track and are easily digested alongside the guitars. This is a straight to your face track that would be a heavy hitter live and would surely create some motion in the pits. The final track, aside from a few disgruntled growls, has just four words for the vocals. "It Takes A Toll" also for me comes across as a melodic, fast, and groovy punk track with some elements of sludgy doom. The guitars are creative as the song strays from the main riff, but are melodic and catchy like the rest on the EP. The song finishes up with relaxed guitar picking and adds dark melody to the track which is always a nice touch to end a release.

Though it is just three tracks, there are a lot of good things to take from the EP. The songs are well composed and have a heavy driven tempo and tune to them. The vocal work alongside the music has a faded element to them at times that allows for the drums and guitars to hit harder and portray more power. It is a short but sweet release that should receive positive feedback and set the grounds for more to come in the future.
