Onirik - The Fire Cult Beyond Eternity album cover

ONIRIK formed in Lisbon, Portugal in 2002. He released his first full-length in 2005. "The Fire Cult Beyond Eternity" is the band's fifth release, and contains seven tracks. "Cult Beyond Eternity" leads off the album. It opens with heavy, distorted guitars and that traditional Black Metal sound. The riff is dark, and bass guitar dances around it. The vocals are vile utterances but the instruments occupy much of the track.

"Trapped in Flesh, Blood and Dirt" opens similarly, with thick guitars, dancing bass, and harrowing vocals. It picks up after the half-way mark, into a frenzy of sorts. There is an odd dissonance to the music as well. "Assigned to the Inexorable Flames" is an over nine-minute beast, opening much the same way as the previous tracks. The sound stays fairly steady throughout, with various riff patterns and bass work that play together in an odd way.

"Melodies of Reflection and Praise" is close to eight-minutes in length. It features a similar sound as the other tracks, and the album is starting to fall into the world of the mundane. As with his other works (NOITE), I can see that he finds a sound he likes and sticks with it. I do, however, enjoy the varied bass work, as you don't often hear that in the genre. "Granted the Vision, Molded into Stone" is the first song that doesn't feature chaos in the opening. It's slower, and more structured, allowing the evil to sink in deeper. It does eventually pick up, but that dissonance between guitar and bass is ever-present.

"Murmurs of the Aging Vessel" begins slowly, with a majestic riff and again with that dancing bass guitar. The drums create a marching rhythm as first. It picks up in pacing eventually, and blurs together with the other songs. There is a long fade-out at the end. "Apathy of Might" closes the album. It opens with a fuller attack, and those bass lines high in the register. It has a slightly different sound than the other tracks, but still remains pretty similar.

My main problem with the album lies in the overly similar use of sound. That bass guitar work is very nice, however, and unusual in the genre. But as with NOITE, Gonius finds a sound that he likes and just hammers it into the ground, repeating it from one song to another. The sound is everything that you would want out of a good Black Metal album, but the repetition just kills is dead in its tracks.https://onirik.bandcamp.com/
