Hailing from Switzerland, OMOPHAGIA is back with their third full-length, "646965". Whatever those numbers mean is up for interpretation, but regardless of the album title's meaning, all we need to know is that this is full of Brutal Technical Death Metal of the highest caliber. Pulling influences from heavy-hitters such as CYTOTOXIN, DEEDS OF FLESH, DECAPITATED and, at moments, RINGS OF SATURN, this is a very interesting album.
The first single for the album was the title track. The song is catchy and jumpy with infectious grooves that are guaranteed to get stuck in one's head. The track is nothing near their most complex material, but it is a great introduction to the record.
RINGS OF SATURN vibes come into effect on "Evolve" and "Absolute Zero", but throughout every track, the band that I can most closely compare this band's sound to is CYTOTOXIN. Each track has this jumpy technicality that weaves in and out of brutality. The album is even equipped with a similar songwriting style to the Chernobyl-obsessed band. The tight technicality and song composition prevail with every track.
"Mortal Dissociation" is notable for showing that the band knows how to write a song no matter how complex it can get. The intro is reminiscent of late DEEDS OF FLESH, making use of the dual guitar attack while simultaneously reeking with brutality. Later in the song throughout many technical riffs and wizardry the intro riff is revisited, helping the track close full circle.
If there is one thing that I did not like about this album it was the structure. After track six, the album provided its listener with its two weakest tracks. It hits a lull that cannot be avoided no matter how good the last two tracks are. If the first six songs were divided up a bit more, this album would be much more successful, and then there wouldn't be such a power vacuum near the end.
Overall, Omophagia have presented a shockingly brutal and fantastic album. Other than the album's structure and a few songwriting nitpicks of my own, this record is almost perfect. If you're a fan of HIDEOUS DIVINITY, NILE or CYTOTOXIN, this album is for you. And, yes, I could namedrop all day with this album because the music is that inspired and well-executed.
