OLD GROWTH is a black metal solo project by German instrumentalist Shaman Animist having only been established in 2019, this band is still fairly new to the black metal scene, but little time was wasted in getting into the studio for a debut full length album release in "Mossweaver" which was released via Supreme Chaos Records in December of 2020.

The album seems like a short one with only seven tracks to it's name but even with only that amount, the album is close to an hour in length so there is plenty there for black metal fans to enjoy as there is only one track on this album that is under seven minutes long and that one track is only an instrumental.

Having not released any singles prior to the release of this album, listeners have no idea what to expect from the band, OLD GROWTH has an atmospheric black metal sound, putting a lot of focus on nature, wilderness, shamanism, primitivism & ancient rites in an attempt to move away from the idea of music and more to an audible experience of feral nature.

The album's opening track is titled after the band itself "Old Growth" it is just under ten minutes long, the track goes through periods of a calm and mellow style of playing but then builds to high intensity "in your face" musical chaos with fast paced blast beat drumming and screaming vocals but will then come back down again to a more mellow sound.

The next track I want to touch on is the albums second track titled "Oakenheart" and that's because this track is the longest on the album by just under a minute clocking in at nearly eleven minutes on it's own. This track, like its predecessor has it's calm and atmospheric style with its slow and powerful guitar riff and hard hitting drums but can also turn the intensity up on a dime and unleash hell with demonic vocals and fast paced, high intensity instrumentation.

The last track I will bring up is on the polar opposite end of the spectrum in terms of length to the previous track "Call Of The Spirit Night" is the shortest track on the album clocking in at under three minutes in length, this track is entirely instrumental, a very calm track, with some unusual and interesting sounds that aren't heard often so it was a nice addition to the album, it had a very relaxing sound to it, didn't build up to anything like the other tracks may have done, it just had a nice easy listening vibe to it.

Having listened through the album in it's entirety I can say it's definitely one for black metal fans to keep an eye out for, if you like long tracks and interesting sounds you'll love this album
