Missa Tridentina
Of Darkness
OF DARKNESS is a Funeral Doom Metal band based in Spain in 2004. This is the band's second album, and the first in eight years. It has seven songs. "Adjutorium Nostrum in Nomine Domini" is an introductory piece to the album. It is dark and with heavy synths...almost like a church service for the undead. "Requiem Aeternam" is low, slow, and near death in its presentation. The vocals are so guttural, they almost come off as moans from a man taking his last breath. In the background are wails from his victims, and other evil sounds.
"Dies Irae" is similar in terms of all of the various background effects. It helps to thicken up the sound, which again, is quite harrowing, and in fact, remains one of the more recognizable elements of their sound. "Deus Qui Umanae Substantiae" is very similar to the first three songs, and at this point, the band needs to work harder to diversify their sound. Don't get me wrong, the sound so far is filthy, raw, and nefarious, but the album is starting to run together a bit. "Eis Requiem, Eis Requiem Sempiternam" has some more dissonant sounds, but is similar in scope, presentation, and pacing. The issue is not the music, which is deeply disturbing, it's that most of the songs sound the same.
"Requiescant In Pace" is a monstrous 12 minute opus. Again, the problem is, it sounds too similar to the other songs. We really didn't need a 12 minute song of this nature. The shorter "Ite Missa Est" closes the album, similar to how it opened. Overall, this was a nice change of pace for a Funeral Doom album, but even know the sound was different, all of the songs sounded too close to one another. If the band could vary their offerings between all of this filth, it would go a long way to help them keep a foot hold in the genre. As it stands, however, it was just a mediocre effort.
