Beyond the Aeons

Octoploid

Once again, the Fins prove their paramount songwriting ability. This sound is unique, and carries with it elements of old School Prog with modern Death Metal. The combine these two things flawlessly, into a sound that reminds me of some of the best music of yesteryear but it retains a modern edge, with plenty of listenability.

From Bandcamp, “OCTOPLOID is the solo band of Olli-Pekka Laine and was formed in 2022 what has led to “Beyond The Aeons,” the act's debut album which is due to be released on July 5, 2024 via Reigning Phoenix Music (RPM). Combining elements from 90’s Death/Black Metal, 70’s Prog Rock and 90’s Psychedelic Rock, their music has its own place on the map. In one phrase, OCTOPLOID's sound has been described as "Classic Death Prog." The album has eight songs. “The Dawns in Nothingness” is first, and the sounds is expansive. The song makes several shifts early on, from Progressive Rock to Death Metal, and it has elements of OPETH in the sound. The old school keyboards add more depth the sound, and it’s obvious early on that you can’t pigeon hole this band. “Coast of the Drowned Sailors” is another genre bending song, with some very catchy elements. I love that you can hear the bass guitar, with clearly annunciated notes. There is also some eastern elements in some of the guitar work. “Human Amoral” has a hasty sound from the fast moving riff, bass, vocals and drums working together like a well-oiled machine. There are even some clean moments, but when the song wants to bite, it does, both deep and firm.

“Shattered Wings” has calmer and catchy tones at first, and you could ride this jaunt for days, even weeks. The title track is a short, somber, and moody song that seems to encapsulate the sound of the album quite well, and prepares the listener for the final three. “The Hallowed Flame” features a combination of hardened, ardent elements with more emotional ones, and the vocal performance here is stand-out, highlighting his laments. “A Dusk of Vex” closes the  album. It’s a firm song with a strong riff and darkness swirling around it, but the harmonized clean vocals in the chorus takes the song on a sharp 180. The transitions here are almost seamless, and you have to be ready for them, because they come out of nowhere.
