After many modern so called Hardcore and Death Metal releases, Relapse Records offers a Death Metal album that seems capable of blowing our minds away, especially if take in mind the history of some musicians that take part in this band. That was the first thought I had when I read some stuff about OBSCURA. The thing is, are they really able to kick our asses?
The band hails from Munich, Germany, and is comprised by musicians like Jeroen Thesseling (ex PESTILENCE), Grossmann and Muenzner (both ex NECROPHAGIST members) and Kummerer (ex BLACK HORIZONS member). I guess these guys wanted to create something on their and in 2002 OBSCURA was born. After their debut Retribution on Vots Records, the band signed a contract with Relapse.
OBSCURA now release their sophomore full-length effort through the US label, hoping to enter the premier league of technical Death Metal. Did I say technical? Of course, what did you expect from ex NECROPHAGIST members? Cosmogenesis is only for those who like their Death Metal technical, with melodic leads full of sweep picking, fusion breaks and a jazzy bassist. With a sound similar to bands like NECROPHAGIST, MARTYR and AUGURY, these guys are blasting the shit out of their instruments to create an ultra heavy album. The fact is that everywhere on the net, there are people that praise Cosmogenesis, describing it as one of the best technical Death Metal albums the world has ever seen.
I guess that if you have ever spent some time to listen to DEATH's Individual Thought Patterns, NECROPHAGIST's Epitaph, ATHEIST's Piece Of Time and many other samples of hypertechnical brutality, Cosmogenesis will not amaze you. Let's say that it is just a good Death Metal album that seems kickass among the numerous shitty releases that flood the market nowadays.
