Obliterate - Impending Death album cover

OBLITERATE (I swear I can't believe no one else came up with that name yet) are a Canadian Deathcore group formed in formed in 2010. Me getting Deathcore albums to review is a rare occasion, so I'm always particularly interested in talking about this type of music, even though I'm not the biggest fan of the genre itself.

First off, let me just say that the title-track blows everything else out of the water. The production is perfect and the songwriting is unpredictable, yet careful. One great thing about this album is that the songs are quite short. In my opinion, the genre can't really hold much more than 4 minutes, and I appreciate that OBLITERATE agrees with me on that, since the longest song here is the last one, "Reconquered," with a 5:04 to its name, and even then, the last 20 seconds are just a fading loop. Speaking of track no. 8, it's not as good as the kickoff song, but I still think it's one of the best ones on this thing, the intro especially, with the djenty rhythm and the lead guitars, which are pretty damn tasty and often utilized, to my hearing's great pleasure. As for the vocals, they're kind of generic, to be honest. I didn't and don't care about Rémi Provencher's performance that much, solid and fitting, but not something that significantly improves the quality of "Impending Death".

So now comes the part where I say this is a great disk, right? Not necessarily. After several listens (while paying special attention to some tracks), there are 3-4 songs here that I can say are legit good, and the rest ranges from kind of above average, to VERY meh. So if your "Impending Death" consists of tracks 1, 2, 7 and 8, then you have some great music in your possession, but if it's the actual record, you have 28 minutes of hit-or-miss music.
