Raising their metal-banners in Utrecht, Holland, this four-men band is bringing us sounds of Stoner Rock wrapped in many forms and colors, adding sludging sound and some Industrial Metal, OBESE released their full-length in June, this year.
Well, I must admit, this opening is something I was not expecting at all; from the first second of "Enion" there is an utter aggression and inhuman vocaling skill. Starting with a deep shout and harsh almost droningsludging sound in some parts fuzziness and groove combined with now and then Industrial-ish Metal deeply rooted into Stoner Rock (which is their primate genre) with fine adds of progression can easily be your favorite mark of "Kali Yuga" album. Heading to "Rite of Fire", man, you almost can taste Industrial Metal in this one. Like I am listening to Southern version of RAMMSTEIN, I know it does sound crazy, but somehow I feel that way, maybe combination of low-tuned guitars and lots of synths and other electronic elements make me feel so, but I think you'll feel the same. Fourth name in the play-list is "The Bitter Blast"; there is not actually so much to say about this one; it most surely does look alike other, previous songs, but then again there are parts where I almost thought am listening to different band, a complete oppsite to entering songs. Right after I finished listening to "Red as a Sun" and when I already fed myself with lots of similar riffs and almost the same vocaling type, same shouts and deepscreaming singing and I thought, man, is all the fun already gone, there came a 6th manifest, a divinful introduction of "Steamroller" and I loved it, the whole thing, I caught myself semi-headbanging while writing down this, a mark no.1 if you ask me; if you'd need me personal opinion I ask you to make more songs like this one,a breath of fresh air. If you were satisfied with 6th one, as I was, then accomplishment no. 8 is your cup of tea. "Bow" - instant recall of some MUSHROOMHEAD and some CROWBAR deeds, well done.
So, at the end of this album I cannot say that I, personally, enjoyed every little second of it nor I think my metalhead friends and people I know will more than; there is not much of stuff I could overly enjoy in, like I am repeating funny video I found online, a viral hit, but after third time I watched it - not so funny anymore. I can see your skills, and will to push forward, your need to create something new and unseen, just what you did in "Begerter Dead Letter", a pleasure of Doom Metal patterns have brought lots of points to "Kali Yuga" album; yet, 2-3 songs are not enough to make an album that awesome.
