Nox Formulae is a Black Metal band from Greece; "Drakon Darshan Satan" is their second full length album.  As far as this style goes, this is one of the better albums I've heard this year.  I absolutely love the production because it hits all the right notes. It is raw but still clear enough to not feel like it was recorded in a bathroom.  Every thing is loud but not overly and each instrument is played with extreme power.

The opening track, "Psychopath of Nox," begins at full speed—drums and riffs playing a million miles an hour.  The bass stands out too, an instrument that is all too often buried in Black Metal.  Much of time, it is responsible for the best parts of the rhythm and even bits of groove. A very strong, opening statement for the rest of the album. "The Black Stone of Satan,"  shows the band isn't afraid to add in some melody but it doesn't come off as campy or out of place.  If anything, it feels very natural because it flows so well into their aggressive sound.  The song's middle portion is very energetic and the band fires on all cylinders. The vocals are particularly badass.  In fact, throughout the album Monkshood 333 (what a name) displays great vocal prowess for the style.

"Berzerks of Od," is a depraved track, it almost doesn't seem like human beings are playing it at times.  The lead guitar and bass really find their stride together here for some great harmonic moments that are even catchy to my ears.  The last minute of the song is rather intense with a focus on the riffs being backed by pummeling snare and snappy double bass. I like how it fades away to just those depraved, near speaking tones, screams. The last track, "Eve of Annihilation," has a great opening riff and proves its worth as the ending track-it definitely sends the album off on a bang.  Some of the album's fastest, most intense moments can be found within.  The latter half the song is a burner of a track, it almost seems like there is no end to the constant battering of the senses until the track just sort of gently fades out.

NOX FORMULAE's "Drakon Darshan Satan" is how you do Black Metal right.  They keep it fast, brutal but always interesting.  See? You can play evil music and still make it listenable.
