Hey, how about a fanciful blend of Metalcore and traditional Folk Metal? Need your flute and violin with a heavy dose of Djent, distortion, and double drum bass? Want all of that from a band in Hungary? Then you will love the new EP "ReSet_" from NIBURTA! This is an accurate description of exactly what you will hear and despite my skepticism, I found that they have perfected their style in this crossover subgenre. But why must they tease me with only three songs?
Their name comes from the Scythian god of war and agriculture. This duality represents a good choice in name for NIBURTA since their music is a fusion of two completely separate genres in Metal. They describe themselves as "combining the brutal sounds of modern Metalcore with the catchy and mystical tunes of traditional instruments like bagpipes, violin, flutes, kobza, infused with the distinctive folklore of the Balkans." I think very highly of this concept for its originality. When else have you heard Folk Metal with a technical breakdown?
A few things I enjoyed particularly include the use of male and female vocalists (akin to ELUVEITIE or even Amy Lee of EVANESCENCE), the heavy and sometimes technical riffs (think PERIPHERY), and the generous use of those traditional instruments which add so much more flavor to the music. It creates an unusual atmosphere of festivity and aggression at the same time. Perhaps much in the way the god Niburta is portrayed, the music can be imagined as a celebration of a good year's harvest and preparation for war at the same time. And props to the studio and producer for the quality of the audio that was recorded for only with legitimate high caliber production can the power of "ReSet" really be grasped.
I am hopeful that there will be more music to come since a three-song EP is not a big enough sample to get the full scope of talent the members of NIBURTA possess. I do however believe that it is a large enough sample to make an educated assessment of their potential and holy damn does this band have it. I'm keeping my ears to the wind for the next offering from these guys as Hungary's premier Folk Metalcore ensemble!
