Pure Hate

You know how it is when you get a new CD to review, come without any expectations, and get practically blown away? This here is exactly what happened to me with Nexus One's debut EP. The Whitby, UK thrash outfit come at you from the first second with a relentless assault of good sound, solid guitar work, angry vocals, and tight bass/drum work. They actually remind me a lot of Devil Driver, just less melodic, take this as a compliment!
From the second the first track of the EP "15 Minutes Of Shame" starts, the barrage of angry, distortion filled, but at the same time crystal clear guitars fills your ears, the throaty vocals that are a blend of DEVIL DRIVER's Dez Fafara, and MACHINE HEAD's Rob Flynn, come to the forefront. The song, which is supposedly about what has become of the UK's pop culture, flows good, and at the end makes you want to listen to it again. And again. But... Can't remain on one song for the whole review, have to move on so, moving on!
The second track of the album, "The Nightmare Is My Life", starts with a cool bass and drums only intro. The song soon turns into a mid tempo thrash metal beast. At about halfway through the song, it breaks into a short, quite unexpected break, interesting!
The third track, "Two Face", is in my opinion their big hit of the release. Heavy, melodic intro, not too long, not too short, that quickly evolves back to the thrash monsters I've come to expect by now from these guys. The gang vocals in the chorus are a nice addition that you don't get much anymore. The tempo of the song undergoes some changes, up and down throughout the song, refreshing changes actually, the lead guitar work is melodic, and is up to par with even more famous bands, with supposedly higher technical abilities. As said before, a definite thrash hymn here for them.
Track number 4, "Watch You Die", starts out mid tempo, and then a few seconds later blasts out into a fast paced thrash bomb. Actually, reminding me of CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, or the late 80's SEPULTURA. Angry, heavy, pure thrash metal fun! And here as well, the lead guitar work does not disappoint. Nothing too over the top, but every note is right where it should be, great piece.
Closing track of the EP is "Gods Of War". No time spent on mid tempo intros or anything of the sort, from the beginning a relentless piece of thrash metal assault. Like every track so far on the EP, the riffs are memorable, catchy, nothing new or over the top technically, but nothing of the sort is needed. Thrash metal at it's almost minimalistic finest.
Overall, an awesome piece of music. Great surprise that people actually play this kind of music still. The production and sound is great, riffs are cool, drums are super tight, vocals are throaty but audible, great leads... Looking forward to a full album release!!
