Epidemic
New Years Day

Sending us greetings from Anaheim, California, this foursome of Post Hardcore and even Metal-core deeply covered with veils of Pop-Punk is, as they explain themselves, "A dark tradition of tragic high-drama and grand theatricality embodied by the hitchhiking ghosts of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, the churning emotional smolder of HIM, iconoclastic bombast of MARILYN MANSON and the savage flamboyance of MOTIONLESS IN WHITE. NEW YEARS DAY is heavy, bold and emotional, challenging social media bullies and championing gloominess and melancholy in an empowering way."
How to name this whole manifest, people behind NEW YEARS DAY, their personal touch and approach within making music in one word? Hmm? Well, I cannot think of anything else, any other attribute, than sweet-ish, Pop-Punk kids; I know and I am aware they are far above teenagers with wanna-be brutal skills, but hey, they are giving us that cute almost High school-band story, a bit emotional yet dedicated to commercial music making. "Epidemic" starts with a song named "Joker" and in its first seconds you can taste and smell all the cuteness and sweetness inside Ashley's voice; here and there a brutal sounding screams, yet overall is a voice of your alternative high-school darling. I am not going to focus myself on her only, but, you will see that guys behind her charish classical ways of playing such a genre; intense passages within breakdowns, slowly brought and perfectly made for jumping. Second one in a row, "Other Side", is almost everything you could hear in the first one; simple breaks that go almost throughout whole thing, only difference I've found is a male growling on backing vocals and a riff that appears somewhere around the chorus, so melodic and passionate, almost alike to Modern Melodic Death Metal. The fourth song, also a homonymous of the album's name, "Epidemic" recalls me of some EVANESCENCE work, some recognizable riffs and that harsh emotion they have. "Let Me Down", my personal fave and also album's out-port song is, and I am proud to admit, a whole new path, the way I'd like to listen if I ever become their fan; combination of electronic elements and guitars with few break-downs and awesome drumming can be their trade-mark. Maybe, fans of LINKIN PARK, can find this lay similar to "The Catalyst"; just so you know, I am not calling no one a copy-cat, just observing things.
I am not quite sure what would you think about this, but someone whom has grown up with AMORPHIS (their Black Metal era were some of first Metal songs in my life), then old IN FLAMES, STRATOVARIOUS and SUMMONING, like I did, only can see a bunch of guys that decided to make music and earn money. Here, we have main ingredients for such a thing: cuteness and catchiness, a signs of brutality and strong and attractive form of make-up, talking about most known themes among teenagers - broken hearts and social status. Bottom line - they are decent and pretty much talentfull band, but this EP is just an average, already seen lay. That's it.
