Neverlight Horizon - Dead God Effigies album cover

"Neverlight Horizon" is a Death Metal band from Belgium formed in 1999. "Dead God Effigies" is the bands third studio album. "Useless Humanity" storms in at the speed of lightning with electric guitars zapping and spitting out a demonic tone while guttural vocals inhabit the pit the drums have created by breaking the earth with powerful hits and potent blast beats. The pace is kept throughout never slowing and keeping everyone on edge. "Drowning Blackness" continues the death fest with faster guitars and a once again non stopping drum beat. Vocals merge a little too well into the back ground for my liking on this track but other than that it remained solid under scrutiny.

"The Awakening" starts at a slower pace utilizing slower drum hits and ringing guitars to hold you in the moment. The vocalist switches between low vocal growls and high pitched screams to show of technical ability and to contrast the previous song. In the end we do get a heavier song which proves that this technique works. "From Black Liquid to Extinction" starts with a pounding drum beat and low growls whilst the distorted guitar follows along with a rather uninspired riff, despite this tight drumming and bass playing holding the piece together proving to be this songs saving grace. This song also suffers from over cluttering in some places giving it a messy unclean sound.

"Desperate Final Assault" follows suit with the rest of the album, the vocalist switches between low and high screams while the drummer sets a blistering pace for the guitarist to desperately chase after. Everything is kept tight and the solo is very good. In the end I think this album had its high and low points with some songs being great and some falling squarely in the category of mediocre. The vocals perform great most of the time but I must add I believe the drummer truly holds everything together like the super glue of the band. "Neverlight Horizon" has made a good album and should be praised as such.
