NEPERIA is a symphonic metal band from Greece. The band was formed in 2009 and has seen some lineup changes over the years. "Drawing New Worlds" is the bands debut album under New Dream Records. NEPERIA incorporates dual vocals, male and female, in their songs.
The album starts out with "Leap of Faith". A short instrumental number to wet your appetite on what the band has to offer. It is a very beautiful piece of music to begin the album. It seamlessly rolls into "Drawing New Worlds." This song begins with a heavy use of what sounds like a keyboard or synthesizer. It is fast paced and catchy as it interweaves with the guitars, bass, and drums. When the vocals hit they are the beautiful operatic voice of Stella Tzovara. Stella's voice melds with the music and goes far above it at the same time. George Tzahristas guttural vocals bring weight and turmoil to Stella's lighter emotional wails. With this song the band hooked me, and I was anxiously awaiting the rest of the album.
"Anthem" begins with a bare bones guitar riff. As the song progresses the band adds more elements to bring the sound up to a crescendo. Just when you think the song is going to burst out, they bring it back to a slower acoustic sound. The entire time the drums are keeping a steady cadence that bores into your mind. You can't help but tap your foot along with the beat of this song. As they build elements on top of one another the song grows into a fantastic song that seems to encompass the room.
"Shadows Surround" me comes right out of the gates with a big sound of angelic chanting over strong guitars and drums. This like the other songs seems to grow into an experience more than just being a song. The band lets you stew with the instrumental parts of this track for awhile before letting the vocals kick in. When they do they don't disappoint. Stella's vocals are intertwined with a beautiful piano melody. This song grows and gets bigger as the music goes on ending as a crescendo that has you yearning for the next track.
"Unfeigned Emotions" throws a massive sound and vocals at you as soon as it starts. Stella's vocals are on point as they fade into a catchy musical number that will get stuck in your head. As with the other songs on this album this track takes on a life on its own and seems to be so much bigger than its. It fills your ears and mind with so much sound and all off it works so well together. Even the switches from the operatic singing to the guttural vocals is done good and flows well.
The band ends the album with the track "Shattered Light". It's a fast-paced song that doesn't let up on the vocals, guitars, bass or drums. The consistent cadence that the drums hit will have you head banging all the way through the song. The only problem is that once the song ends there isn't anymore to experience.
I loved this album from NEPERIA. This is a debut album that will rocket this band into the forefront of the metal world. I wouldn't be surprised to be hearing more from them in the future. The vocals worked very well together throughout the album. All the songs had such a rich heavy sound that they felt as though the headphones wouldn't be able to contain them. This album is a definite one to check out and crank up as you drive down the road.
