The first thing you'll undoubtedly notice about "Cosmic Horros" is that it is two tracks long. For an EP, this is not especially uncommon in certain genres of music like Sludge or Doom Metal where the tracks themselves can stretch for 10 or 20 minutes at a time, but here the total runtime is little more than 12 minutes long. So with such a short length, why did I find it difficult to listen to the whole thing?

The answer to this probably has something to do with the fact that both songs are painfully similar, using the same style of vocals, the same religious ambient intros and outros that are overused in Black and Death Metal (chiming bells I'm looking at you), and the same insistence on playing every instrument as fast as humanly possible. "Oath of Black Fire" shows some promise at first as it deviates from this; playing with the drum tempo to give the record some rhythm, before giving up and going straight back to the expected. It's a shame, as moments like this are few and far between for the rest of the EP and it's heartwarming to see bands spreading their wings in their genres every now and again.

What more is there to say about a two-track EP? I feel it necessary to point out that the creature on the album cover reminds me of the Legendary Black Beast of Argh from Monty Python's Holy Grail, but other than that it once again conforms to the genre stereotypes of tentacles and other Cthulu-esque imagery.

This is a release that for the most part is exactly what you expect, and while some may be happy with that I for one was hoping for more. With only two songs included, it's fair to expect them to be well crafted and for lots of time to have been spent on making them special, but this doesn't seem to be the case. NEKROMANTEION has yet to release a full length album, which bodes well for their future as it means they're still developing their sound through EPs before doing so. Let's hope that they produce something worthwhile when they do.
