Nefandus - Reality Cleaver album cover

NEFANDUS is a Black Metal band from Norrkoping, Sweden.  Formed in 1993, they released their first full-length album in 1996.  Following a long break, they recorded their second full-length album in 2008.  "Reality Cleaver" is the third, and contains eight tracks. "Verses from the Chaosverse" is the opening track, a slow, evil sounding track with that familiar one-two chord change structure we often hear in this genre.  The vocals are scratchy but somewhat discernable.  The production is fairly muted, giving the sound a depressing quality, by design I would imagine.  "A Single Second of Clarity" starts with bass and drums but settles quickly into a similar meter and song structure.  The interlude riff provides an extra layer of power to the track.  "Qayin's Hunt" is the third track, with a bit of a slower meter, and hears the band really digging into the low end of the spectrum, as if they were searching for Hell itself.  This song is particularly sinister.

"Redeemer of Fire" is the next track.  The key is a bit higher, and some riff changes show some texture.  The title track, "Reality Cleaver" is the fifth track.  A looser opening riff allows the song to breathe a bit more, and the vocals are dialed back somewhat, favoring the power and brutality of the instruments. "Reborn as Wolf" hears the tempo speeded up, and some blast beat drumming to go along with the frenzied vocals.  The breakdown following the second chorus sounds like the undead marching into the pit.  I enjoy the steady and maleficent rhythm in "From the Great Deep."  This would be the perfect song to set to a torture session.  The atmosphere when the double bass comes in is really dark and deep.

Closing the album is the eight track, "Scorn of the All-Mind."  The title is chanted twice before the instruments close in.  Some clean vocals give the song a haunting quality.  Overall, this is fairly linear Black Metal, and the band has a formula that they stick to very closely.  In the genre it would be very traditional Black Metal, but doesn't offer much in the way of creativity or originality.
