A 'more-of-the-same' form of music of a band with a huge potential...
November 24, 2023

The more bands exist in a Metal subgenre, the greater the chances it will go unnoticed by fans, because the early acts (the pioneers) will always be remembered, and the comparisons with will arise. Sometimes such tsunami of works on a same genre bores the ears, so you better have a strong and personal work to boost your chances. But even being good, some bands fails to escape the tsunami of ‘more-of-the-same’ releases, as the Canadian act NECROTICGOREBEAST, as heard on “Repugnant”. The quartet plays a form of Brutal Death Metal where influences of classic Death Metal arises (evading the focus on slow paced tempos that are usual for the genre) with a good technical appeal on the instrumental arrangements.

But it lacks something different and more personal, something that would make their work be noticed by the fans. It’s full of energy and aggressive, done with care, but still a prisoner of the models used by many. It’s not bad for the fans of the genre, but it doesn’t have that ‘something’ to be saved in the middle of the flood of releases of the genre (and remembering that Brutal Death Metal is eroded due the great number of bands on it today). Gabriel Joly (who worked on the recordings of guitars, bass and vocals), Olivier Bourgeois (that did the same with the drums) and Miguel Tereso (mixing and mastering) did their best on the album, and the sonority is something different from the usual, because it sounds more into a traditional Death Metal way, not on a Brutal Death Metal one, allowing their musical work to be fully understood without problems.

The problem resides in the songs. Once again: they’re good, but not astonishing, nor are up to face acts as ABORTED or SUFFOCATION eye to eye (an idea that every band must have when starting). The quartet has potential, but it’s drowned into their lack of ‘I-wanna-be-somebody’-thing as depicted by songs as “Repugnant” (the bone stomping work of drums is very good, but the clichés are a torment), “Unsedated Face Removal” (a massive set of guitar riffs can be heard, but that boring slow tempos of the genre drag things into a morass of mediocrity), “Gouged Eye Copulation” (some very good slower parts unusual to the genre are heard on this one), “Nail Clipper Circumcision” and “Phlebotomized”. Maybe it’s a case of turning the music device that plays something to them, and of the quartet start to search into the member’s own hearts (and please, such low grunts can be done in a better way, even with the complaints of fans).

Again: NECROTICGOREBEAST is a good band that must stop to rely on the genre’s clichés and start to believe in the members’ own ideas. If they do it, the successor of “Repugnant” will be a classic.
