Necropsy - Exitus album cover

Now within their 33rd year, NECROPSY, has just released their third EP, entitled "Exitus", a brutal and decrepit 22 minute opus containing tracks centered on the macabre and destructive.

The EP opens with "Meat Ceremony", a divergent lead plays between two guitars which is quickly joined by bass and drums after one reputation before the entire band slips into the verse. "Fucking Dead" rings out like a knell in the right channel as the song starts up then the rest of the band plays along to the same drone, the differentiating guitars signal a change in progression and the verse starts thereafter. The song slows considerably during the middle section before returning to the verses. "206 Motives" commences in rhythmic flare once again foreshadowing the commencement of verse through the divisi of the guitars. The song features the most changes out of any other track on the listing ranging from a full-frontal assault to a refrained an eerie spacing of chord and rhythm not dissimilar to the likes of DANNY ELFMAN. "Butcherado" is the last track on the EP and the fastest at that both in speed and run time, the wah and dissonant fueled solos exemplify the band's musical stylings in full.

The sludgy and distorted guitars have about themselves such a defining tone, even for the genre they manage to stand out for being clear and full something which doesn't often occur in Death Metal, as most bands choose to scoop the mids in favor of clarity over intensity. The bass is strong and defining, a bit muddy but easy to discern and providing an even better foundation than the already full sounding guitars. The drums themselves sound loud, having not only a great mix within the kit and the band but also one of the best sounding snares I've ever heard being clear, distinct, and large sounding.

A bit slow for traditional Death Metal but genre defining all the same NECROPSY adds a new EP to their repertoire hopefully holding over fans until the next full release. Any prior fans of the band or those that favor the slower and grittier machinations of Death Metal should find enjoyment in the tracks, I certainly did.
