Zombie Blood Nightmare

Necronomicon Ex Mortis

“Zombie Blood Nightmare” delivers classical Death Metal in the tradition of the 90s, but with a strong melodic component.

NECRONOMICON EX MORTIS, also known as "Naturom Demonto" is a book which serves as path to the evil world. It appeared for the first time in "The Evil Dead" movie in 1981. In the context of this review, NECRONOMICON EX MORTIS appeared for the first time in Chicago, Illinois in 2023. They are a Death Metal band and released their fifth EP. "Zombie Blood Nightmare" was produced, recorded, and mixed by Charlie Waymire (BLOODFEAST RITUAL; OUR DYING WORLD; TARJA) at Ultimate Studios, and it was mastered by Ernesto Homeyer (BLOODFEAST RITUAL; MORTALIS). The EP has a length of about 28 minutes, and it is an independent release. The first song "Left To Die" starts with a guitar-driven instrumental part at measured tempo, introducing a grim melodic framework, which is later being used for the chorus part. The transition to the verse part is smooth. The verses are fast with powerful guitar riffs. The vocals are growls and they vary around the medium end of the guttural range. The choruses go back to a measured tempo, while the chorus line is anthemic. The break delivers an extended and contributing lead guitar solo. "Left To Die" is a very good traditional Death Metal track with a certain catchiness in the melodies. "No More Room In Hell" starts right with the main guitar riff of the track, leading into the verse part at fast pace. The guitar riffing is tight and playful for most of the time. There are many subtle changes in tempo in rhythm throughout the track. The chorus part is almost a sing-along. The break slows down a bit to a measured tempo and is introduced by deep-lying growls, followed by another lead guitar solo. There are several solos during the track, the longest and most contributing one near the end of the track.

"Chopped Up And Burned" continues with the pace of the previous track with fast verse parts and mid-tempo bridges and choruses. The guitar riffing is once again quite playful. The lead guitars are present throughout the track, however, there are several breaks and they offer extended and cool solos. The melodic framework of the track is dark and spine-chilling. The song is with more than seven minutes among the longest tracks of the EP, and it was released as lyric video, with the YouTube link provided below. "Lumbering Blood Sucking Freaks" is introduced by powerful guitar riffs at measured tempo and a sluggish rhythm, transitioning into another fast verse part. The guitar riffing is tight and offers some technicality. The pace of the track varies between the faster verse parts and chorus parts at measured tempo. The melodies are grim throughout the track. The break starts abrupt with the lead guitars and from there another extended lead guitar solo develops. "Hungry For Brains" has a bit of a SLAYER-esque start with the guitar introduction, leading into a fast verse part with tight and catchy guitar riffing. The verse parts slow down once again to a measured tempo. There is a first break relatively early on after the first verse/chorus part with an extended lead guitar solo. After the second verse/chorus part, there is another break with two extended solos. All the breaks and solos create a bit of a hectic atmosphere of the track.

The EP closes with "Demoni" and after an guitar-driven introduction, the main riff of the track opens the verse part. The guitar riffing is tight at mid-tempo. The transition to the chorus part is seamless with a slight increase in tempo. At the heart of the track is another extended lead guitar solo. The end of the track is almost a breakdown with thunderous guitar riffs at measured tempo. NECRONOMICON EX MORTIS release an interesting EP. "Zombie Blood Nightmare" delivers classical Death Metal in the tradition of the 90s, but with a strong melodic component. Central to the tracks is the technical guitar work and the solos. I lost count a bit, but most songs have multiple lead guitar solos. While I enjoyed the technicality of the guitars on each track, the downside is that many songs sound a bit too similar. The EP is well produced. "Zombie Blood Nightmare" is a good release and Death Metal fans will be delighted with the six new tracks.
