Exodus: Shattered Earth Saga Part 1

Nebularis

They have talent, and the songwriting was quite good at times. I also believe that the balance on the album in terms of the different instruments was solid. They just need to find a way to put it all together.

A cracked ball held together by its own mass, its luminescent blood seeping through cracks that span entire continents and boiling oceans: this is the last view the remnants of humanity have of Earth as they flee in horror and anger. But, this event marks only the beginning of their saga, as they come to terms with the reality of what they have done, and perhaps, will do in the years and centuries to come. The overriding question in their minds is twofold; will they find a new home amongst the stars, and if so, will they repeat the same mistakes that led to their world’s obliteration?

The album has eight songs. “Tellurian” is first; a brief introduction to the album. The guitar parts give it a distinct outer space feeling, as it segues into “Cataclysm.” For me, it sounds like early FATES WARNING, and the vocal harmonies are nice. Harsh vocals bubble in the background at times but aren’t responsible for the main sound, and the pronounced bass guitar parts give it some depth. “Aurelia” is a very short instrumental without a lot of sonority, followed by “Subnautica.” This song follows a more linear melody line that is quite charming. It has a smooth and whimsical sound, with a pleasing guitar riff and vocals.

“Voyager” has a soothing sound with harmonized vocals and a healthy dose of keyboards and backing elements. It’s a bit of an exploratory sound as the title suggests. “Exodus” is the third and final short instrumental, gearing up for the final two songs. “Holocene” has an angrier sound at times from the harsh vocals. They give the song a hardened edge but I am not sure that the clean elements connect quite as well as they did in other songs. “Critias” closes the album, and it seems they saved the best song for last. The chorus is very wide open and melodic, and they drive it home.

This 26-minute album is fairly short when it comes to a full-length, but it shows potential from the band. They have talent, and the songwriting was quite good at times. I also believe that the balance on the album in terms of the different instruments was solid. They just need to find a way to put it all together.
