Narthraal - Chainsaw Killing Spree album cover

NARTHRAAL is an Icelandic band dedicated to old school Swedish Death Metal. A critical part of their sound comes from the legendary Boss HM-2 pedal, offering unparalled distortion that has always commanded respect in the Metal community. Often called the "Swedish chainsaw" by fans for its brutal buzzing distortion, it seems to be an inspiration for the album and the sound NARTHRAAL were aiming to display.

"Chainsaw Killing Spree" is the second EP by NARTHRAAL, following their 2014 debut album "Blood Citadel". The opening track "Million Graves to Fill" starts off with the sound of an actual chainsaw revving up and gets into some filthy gloom-and-Doom Metal that just sticks to your soul. Relying on a slow buildup before introducing that HM-2 just gets your heart thumping with the expectation before punching you in the chest with that sweet, brutal sound. Whilst not particularly inventive "Million Graves to Fill" is a throwback wrapped up in a gritty, filthy little package.

"Descent into Darkness" is pitch-black and has a nice groove to it; echoing vocal growls and demonic riffs are on the menu for this track. It is a little bit of a change of pace, but with only two tracks it just feels like more of the same. I really wish NARTHRAAL had presented more than two tracks, because, even though I loved what they have to offer, it's really not even enough to be an appetizer in my opinion. Always leave the audience wanting more and NARTHRAAL certainly does that. Yet a good album, even a short one, should offer satisfaction as well as leaving you begging for more.

If this EP left you with a thirst for more like it does me, NARTHRAAL will be releasing a new album - their first full-length release - in the coming months, so be sure to keep an eye out for "Screaming from the Grave". Hopefully it comes soon, because I can't resist classic Death Metal and the vicious HM-2.
