Nameless - Ossimori album cover

NAMELESS is a Metalcore band from Imola, Italy.  As far as I can tell, this seven track album is their first release.

"Intro" is an eerie, odd opening track, with some dissonant strings and ominous piano chords that eventually give way to subliminal voices and a sterile, industrial riffing.  "Prayers Don't Work" is the second track, roaring in with a heavy ended steady thumping.  Rhythm plays a key role to the sound here, in an almost GOJIRA or SYBREED type of way, though the harsh vocals are more along the line of Metalcore.  When the clean vocals enter during the chorus, I am reminded of some of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE's song structures.  The connection between the verses and chorus is loose here at best, not quite fitting what I was expecting.  In the final chorus the bombast is extended.

The third track, "imAGE" also begins with a rhythmic pounding and overall dark and deeper sound.  They like to keep an air of mystery to their sound I believe.  Once again however when the clean vocals come into play at the chorus, I find a disconnection with the verse.  The double bass lines and guitar solo section are pretty brutal however...I enjoy that part of the song.  The beginning of the fourth track, "Sympathetic," throws me for a bit of a loop, with a loose melody that breathes a little more, and is unlike the previous tracks.  It is almost jazzy in a way.  The vocals continue to collide with the riffs in a way that I can only describe as a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.  At this point I have to conclude that this is intentional on the part of the songwriting, and is oddly unique.  The dissonance is easily heard.

The title track, "Ossimori," opens is an instrumental acoustic melody that could be set to the tune of a Jester's dance.  It is downright jovial, but introspective at the same time, and pleasing to the ear, especially when the rest of the band joins in towards the end.  It has a wonderfully despondent feel to it.  Closing the album is the song "Explosive Cocktail."  This time the might and power of Metalcore take center stage, with a commanding riff and attitude.  This song seems to encompass all of their earlier sounds into a cohesive, linear song.  I am still somewhat miffed at the island that lies between the melody and brutality here however, but I am confident that with some more songwriting and time together this band has a lot of potential.
