MYTH OF A LIFE is back out of the UK with a follow up EP to their 2017 full length SHE WHO INVITES. This is fresh, modern, crisp melodeath. It is well written and well performed with an impressive level of production for a young band. It is a complete sound, defined by the bold and chugging rhythm guitar, and driven by the epic harsh vocals from lead vocalist Phil Core.

It's a shorter EP, coming in at only 4 tracks, and opener "Omen" milks every minute of it's 1:46 length in dramatic ambient suspense. But once things kick off in track two and title track "Chimera", they really get going. A classic melodeath riff leads into a djent and bass driven sound with a modern pulse and edge. Spoken "cleans" take over before we descend into the mayhem that is the vocals of Core. The rhythm guitar is out of control, William Price is an absolute madman. And that's without even mentioning his wicked and melodic precision on the lead guitar parts (he does both). It's excellent. Title track "Chimera" bounces from melodic and catchy to classic melodic death metal to modern groove djent with ease, and blends it all seamlessly into one cohesive track that is catchy as hell. Modern melodeath is in good hands folks, I'm happy to say.

Track 3 "God Within" immediately takes a more classic melodeath tone, and ultimately one that's much heavier and darker. We get a lot of black and doom metal elements mixed in here as well. While "Chimera" felt more jovial and introductory, "God Within" paints a much more serious picture. It's a fantastic anchor piece in this short 4 song EP. The first 2/3 of the track are bombastic and pouncing forward, before we fall into a more ambient and melodically driven back 1/3 that takes the song to a beautiful place. I hear so much of INSOMNIUM here, which is of course the highest of compliments. It's epic, bold, and powerful.

Closer "The True Face of Death" is a fitting way to end the album. The blackest and most chaotic song, it drives forward with an unrelenting pace. But don't be fooled, before the song is over 2/3 of the way through it falls back into the incredible chug and flow that defines the EP. Then, a fitting and epic guitar solo before the chaotic madness returns to close out the track and EP in complete grandeur.

There's pretty much nothing going wrong here, and it's all goddamn incredible. I enjoyed every second of it. I could probably list of few minor complaints, but it would be nit picky for the sake of finding something wrong. Masterpieces come in all shapes in sizes, in this case it's a 4 song EP from a young melodeath band out of the UK.
