Since their debut album, at least on my bill, the German MYSTIC PROPHECY began elevating themselves as one of the top tough, if not the toughest, of the world's Power Metal bands. Their arrival in the late 90s marked once again that European Power Metal is not always nice and cheerful as some have proclaimed over the years. Whether it was their amazing sound or aggression mixed with melody, they seemed to have it all and that is why I like them so much.

Up until their new "Ravenlord" release, also via Massacre Records, MYSTIC PROPHECY has been drawing a series of fists to the skull that will forever remain as memoriam. Nonetheless, while I was so excited to listen to the album, I found out that it wasn't how I imagined it to be. In a way, I felt it was a bit of a letdown though it wasn't terrible as it looks like. MYSTIC PROPHECY marked another album with quality material but in general most of it sounds like a reprise of the same old song formulas of verse, chorus, verse, solo, and chorus. Traditional as it may be, I believe that even tradition has its limits. One the other hand, MYSTIC PROPHECY still has it going. Even if the songs went through the exact same line, each one on its own is a good work of an experienced crew.

This release is a strong evidence of the change in the band's rough edge and in the worldwide scene in overall. In some point, the large majority will inhibit groove that will eventually become an important feature in the music. MYSTIC PROPHECY began issuing grooves in their previous "Fireangel" album, but this time they also raised the level of intensity up a notch while the melodic nature was a bit snubbed to the side.

One of the bands hit songs "Die Now" presents a new kind of monster that lifted its full shape this time. Along with elements of Bay Area Thrash along with harsh vocals, it was a joy to get smacked by a violent nature that went well with the grooves and insane soloing. Furthermore, I sensed that the album was less melodic than earlier releases yet it didn't bother me to like tracks as "Hollow", "Eyes Of The Devil", "Reckoning Day" and "Damned Tonight". Judging by those tracks there is something that will never go away from this band and that is their powerful diverse voice in the front. Listening to those chorus singing rhythms is always a pleasure. Although that it's a cover, "Miracle Man" was the strongest shell. It was played with such ferocity, especially drums and guitars that made me go insane. Guitarist Constantine showed that he is equally wild as Wylde and even more with that bombastic solo.

Even if they haven't reached the same ratings as in their past releases, no one should dismiss the opportunity to take flight on the wing of this black raven.
