Formed in just 2013, Croatian Black/Death Metal band MUKA have not taken long to show the world what they've got, with the release their EP "Svi Šute" following a year later. What I really enjoy about this EP is that MUKA had the balls to experiment a bit and to try find their own sound, rather than just stick to something safe. This has resulted in a few moments that didn't quite nail it, but on the whole made the music much more remarkable.
MUKA launch straight into the slow-paced "Bog S Tobom" is a vile tapestry woven from the most evil darkness. At its very core, the music flows in a more atmospheric black metal vein, although certain elements are kept very true to typical death metal sounds. "Sumpor I Sol" on the other hands sticks more closely to more soul-incinerating melancholic soundscapes, with just enough death elements amalgamated in to give the song an aggressive edge. The vocals here also shift to a more screeching style, as opposed to the more gravely growls used in the other tracks. The pinnacle of the EP, "Smrdi Mi Na Klopku", sees the music take on a heavier, more hostile, and belligerent tone before plummeting into a chasm of pure madness in the latter half which really adds captivating facets to the song. In contrast to this, "Ostani U Blatu" contains more melodic moments, whilst still sticking to this psychotic undertow. Things get taken down in the final song "Daj Mi", making for a welcome reprieve, and gently bringing the listener down again.
With a total run-time just shy of half an hour, "Svi Šute" is fairly long for an EP. There are a few moments where it is clear that the band is still trying to find its feet, but overall this is a very promising EP, and if MUKA manage to keep this up I can see them doing well for themselves in the future. I enjoyed the high levels of variation between the songs: each had its own character, keeping "Svi Šute" fresh and interesting throughout. Definitely worth checking out!
