Mourning Mist
Mourning Mist

MOURNING MIST is an Avant Garde/Doom Metal band from Italy, formed in 2013. The band's determination is to create music that characterizes the Umbrian lands from a dark and unconventional viewpoint. Their debut album here contains six tracks. "The Flowing" starts off the album, cautiously and with mystery. Gradually, additional instruments enter into the gray landscape. Vocal passages are short and angry and the violin makes a fitting assertion. The main riff is heavy and weighted, as if it is struggling to carry along. "Freefall" is a bit shorter, but still maintains that yearning and suspenseful feeling. Once again the violin does a nice job of connecting the dots. Indeed, without it, this track would take on a whole different feeling. It makes me feel like mass confusion or hysteria on the horizon.
Judging by the angst ridden vocals, "Rage" is a reflection of just that. The despondent elements of this genre are still present, but anger weighs in heavier than despair here. "Torment" takes it even further, with a swifter pace and more heightened sense of urgency. "Rise and Decay" is the longest song on the album, clocking in at nearly nine minutes. There is a variety of riff and meter changes that imparts a lot of different variety of sounds and feelings. The solitary violin parts towards the end for example hold your attention to the emotion very tightly. "Lament" closes the album, the shortest track presented. It's an instrumental exercise in both beauty and despair that puts a stamp at the end of the album. Maybe it's just me, but I find the track progression from start to finish to make a perfect orderly sense in terms of track names and musical direction. I wouldn't go so far as to label it a "concept" album per se, but there is more than just a loose collection of unrelated things.
Overall, Doom fans will find this to their liking. There is a strong connection to the elements that you would expect to hear, with a pleasing variety to peak your interests. The violin is just exquisite; the perfect companion to the overall sound.
