Wastelands
Morwinyon
MORWINYON is a new band that formed in 2019 in Italy. Featuring two members, the music has a very absorbing, soundtrack-like quality. Also, because there are only half the members one would expect, the album exhibits a personal quality, an intimate dive into the ether or two musicians' creativity. As such, it is a very enjoyable ride.
Often, when music really speaks to one's mood, or even changes it, the result is an important image. The blackest of Black Metal conjures vehement hatred. This particular album yielded an experience akin to floating on a raft through the ocean. With its swells, ups and downs, and lulls in between, this is surely a journey.
The immediate reaction to "Devouring Flames," the first track was that it was reminiscent classic DEAFHEAVEN. There certainly is an extant Shoegaze presence swimming within the Atmospheric pool. The specific point where they resembled the American Blackgaze pioneers was in the contrast between visceral screams and an elated, yet illusory high. This contrast fuels much of the remainder of the album, and if it is one the reader is fond of, it does happen quite often!
"Indifference" is yet another high mark on the album. The formula works and there is no need to alter it. There is a distinct comfort within the chain reaction that occurs when this band is hitting all cylinders as such. These long soundscapes benefit from such a lush instrumentation committed to tape.
The production is expansive and conducive to this monolithic wall of sound. For two members, it sounds like there are myriad others contributing. The guitar sound is thick, and its presence is exacerbated by the moving rhythms and mood-setting keyboards. The tracks are long, deep, and cover a lot of ground. Because of this, the production forms the basis of this musical journey. It accents it beautifully allowing the music to flow and indeed thrive.
"Wastelands" is an impressive sophomore effort. One has to wonder if the band will play live - it would be quite an experience to hear the album in such a personal setting. It is the ideal album for becoming lost within the sound. It is at once engaging, distracting, and supremely moving. After all, Italy is the perennial home to excellence in music!
