Mortal Factor - No Lessons Needs Learning album cover

Switzerland has brought out some insanely good Thrash bands in the bands with the likes of CORONER leading the pack. So MORTAL FACTOR another small underground band tries to bring out something new to us Thrashers, with their debut album 'No Lesson Needs Learning'. I was surprised to find that the band has been around for more than 10 years and still this is their debut album. It's an interesting album and frankly after a long time I am actually listening to the lyrics very carefully. Let me explain.

"Body in My Bed" brings out some Bay Area style Thrash Metal, with a series of relentless riffage and amazing screaming vocals. There are headbangable moments and cheesy solos all over the music. With "Moving Among You" the band tries to create an eerie and creepy sound before going back to their heavy Thrash sound. As mentioned earlier the lyrics assisted by amazing thick screaming vocals of Dave and Rene, deal with human emotions and behaviour. The main riff here made imagine myself in one of their concerts headbanging, it was THAT good! "Knives Vs Guns" has some angry lyrics dealing with murder, killing and stuff'; but the riffs are what will really excite you, they aren't very innovative riffs, but the relentless cheesy pounding riffs are worth every neck break (same for large parts of the album). "Gotta Get Out" has some slight Djent feel to it and frankly I am not really a fan of Djent style, but make no mistake, this is no weak song. The band continues to show what they are capable in "Whiskey Stream" as they bring in some groovy riffs and again impressive! "Symbols" with its sharp riffs, has some ARTILLERY in it. The album ends with a moderate song in "Final Call", causing a tad disappointment due to expectations created so far.

The only critic I have with 'No Lesson Needs Learning' is a slight lack of innovative riffs, while they do exist, they are few and hard to find. This is an excellent effort for a debut album, which is a surprise because the band was formed way back in 2003. In any case this is a great 2014 Thrash album.
