MORBID EVILS is a death/doom sludge band from Finland, who formed in 2014.  Their latest release, "Supernaturals," is their third full length album; they have also released a live album and a split. As far as doom/sludge goes, I've only heard a few albums this year that match this one in quality (one of which is another TOR release, ET MORIEMUR's "Tamashii no Yama"), which includes instrumentation and song writing. While the latter release relies on atmosphere and unique qualities, "Supernaturals," focuses on punishing riffs and long song structures.  That isn't to say this album is without atmosphere—quite the opposite actually.  While the album as a whole is sulfuric, hellish, and any other number of descriptive wording that equals a landscape of evil blood soaked nightmares, each individual song brings in its own style of setting.

"Fearless," opens the album with extremely caustic riffs and nearly unfathomable bass.  In just under a minute, the song drops a suffocating blanket of electric death where only the desperate extreme vocals and slow but razor sharp drumming can escape.  As the song title would suggest (and these song titles do go with the music, at least in my listening experience), "Fearless" does indeed represent a sound that is moving only forward, with confidence and power but also with an insatiable hunger.  It doesn't need to destroy because it doesn't fear.  Instead of killing, the music beats the listener, bringing them to the brink of death but never really allowing the darkness to completely take over—far more effective to let the dark shroud just hang over head. After the middle portion of the song tumbles, the riffs afterwards bludgeon—at the 5:53 mark, groovy, winding and snakelike guitar sends wave after wave of some perpetual force that only has as singular vision. From here all the way to the ten a half minute mark, the song is a slow chaos where everything seems to slow down to allow these terrible sights and sounds to really sink in.

"Anxious," is a harrowing song that has an odd feel to it-the feeling that something bad is going to happen and there isn't shit you can do about it, except spend energies on dreading whatever bleakness is approaching. Around the 1:06 mark, the brutal guitars and rhythm section all but disappear for a quiet moment but there isn't anything serene about it-more more unnerving than truly quiet.  Much like the brain going into overdrive when a anxious mind loses all distractions, this track just adds to the uncertainty and makes one question just about everything. The melodic tinged riffs around the 3:19 mark are bittersweet, as in the situation that caused the anxiety has passed but there is the unforgiving knowledge there will be another moment where all hope will be lost again. The trippy solo about 75 percent of the way through the song is about as uncertain an muddled as the human brain can get, adding to the theme of the song perfectly.

"Tormented," is such a heavy song that it almost doesn't seem real-much like the torment of true, never ending pain.  But after a life time of pain, does one get used to it?  I don't know but as brutal as this song is, it also sounds just like it needs to.  Not long after the halfway mark, the song ramps up with slick as hell riffs birthing from a crazy guitar solo—the torment has descended into madness at this point. As the riffs rise above themselves and the climax of the song approaches, the depraved vocals add in a certain mood that takes the insanity and makes it nearly palpable. The guitars/bass at the end of the song are HUGE, just massive hammers of sound that made me feel like my brain had been bruised.

The sort of title track, "Supernatural," is last but there definitely isn't anything "least" about it.  As the longest track, it is also the meatiest—and a masterful representation how the band approaches their style.  This track is the most haunting of the four, in no small part of the varied guitars, especially the riffs at the beginning and around the 9:00 minute mark.  The atmosphere among these moments is definitely other worldly. As far as I'm concerned this is another perfect doom album released by TOR and on that is sure to have a spot on many many year end doom/extreme metal lists.  "Supernaturals," is an album that speaks about the human condition on a lot of levels, makes you think, but is also just one heavy and dark fucking album.
