Monsterworks - Overhaul album cover

Plugging along since 1996, MONSTERWORKS have been very productive as of recent years. "Overhaul" is their 11th studio album, and fourth in the last 24 months. There's something to be said about a group full of ideas and the means to execute them in a timely fashion. Jono Blade originally came from New Zealand, but relocated to the UK a few years later and over time the membership changed to include fellow UK musicians.

"Overhaul" may seem short at 6 songs, but the final track "Resolution" clocks in at 12 minutes, 26 seconds - and the overall 36 minutes contains a bevy of ideas and grooves that should appeal to those into Progressive, Stoner, and Death Metal camps. The guitar tone can be a little dirty, atmospheric, and often mirror the hypnotic melodies from guitarist Jono, especially on the title cut where the rhythm section of Hugo on bass and James on drums gets a chance to do a little free form groove slam in between the word delivery. "Penultimate" contains another slightly off-time jagged riff sequence, accented by quicker high note action before again giving way to a more moody, quieter instrumental section - much in line with MASTADON or SOUNDGARDEN as well as vocally like Perry Farrell of JANE'S ADDICTION.

"Resolution" is of course, the pinnacle piece in MONSTERWORKS current repertoire, starting off very doomy but using a number of intriguing effects (panning/ echoing vocals, occasional screams/ growls, and a quiet to heavy buildup during the middle of the arrangement) that keep you on your audio toes from beginning to conclusion. This track is where a lot of the US stoner/doom/death aspects come up like NEUROSIS or PARADISE LOST - giving the band a broad palate of influences that help them incorporate quite a musical stew.

"Overhaul" displays a band confident in their sound and surroundings. Pick this up if you enjoy primal Metal with a strong Stoner/Progressive Death vibe.
