"Marras" is an old Finnish word for "death" and "mieli" means "mind/mood". Therefore, Marrasmieli has a literal translation of "death of the mind/mood" or "dying mind/mood". Finnish Black Metal newcomers MARRASMIELI release their debut full-length album, following the 2018 2-track self-titled EP. Many people on Bandcamp have high reviews on this album noting its mix of Folk, Pagan and Atmospheric Melo Death.

"Embrace the Eternal" has an upbeat, Folk mixed with Melo Death start. Reminds me in segments of KALMAH. The song goes in and out of different styles, but it keeps it a fresh sound. The tempo set from the start is solid; it keeps up through the instrumental start into the introduction of aggressive vocals. The vocals do not take over, they blend the sound together perfectly. The pace may slow in segments at the end, but the balance is never lost. The song itself holds together well. The folk instrumentalism returns as almost an outro to the song also, working well with the placement.

"Those Who Are Long Gone" has a faster start, no gentle intro to this one. The balance is fully controlled once more. This song has the inverted approach compared to "Embrace the Eternal". This one slows down midway through, but its composure just creates a beautiful harmony, so no complaints. It is a very much different style to Melo Death as they usually have a song, which is slow and picks up or it remains in similar pace, this one breaks the mold and keeps the song brilliant. The pace certainly picks in the final third to how it started, which is a great rick. There are a few licks of folk in the riffs, but minimal. Another solid effort. Once more has a strong instrumental outro, adds a touch of class to the song.

"Karakorum" begins with a progressive instrumental start. Feels a lot more Black Metal vibes from this starter. This would explain how people has included the Atmospheric comments. The vocals are once again aggressive, but controlled and balance, not hard to follow and they control the melody, working in harmony with what the instrumentalists are laying down. Once more this the folk and harmonic melodies in the song, they are beautiful. The thing I like the most is there are no distorted screams, to take anything away from the song. The pace may continue to change, but this just keeps the song fresh and interesting. The aggressive change after 6-minutes is a stroke of genius, not just allowing the song to just flow, it changes direction and reignites the spark to keep us on our toes

"The Ardent Passage" has the similar folkish style intro that by now we have come to enjoy. The aggressive vocal approach has remained strong, working once again in harmony with the melodies created from the instrumentalists. This is a very similar style to what we have heard up to this point, but as it is, still a great song we do not mind. The vocals are used here as more of a breaker in melodies, which works well to create new harmonies.

"Allot" starts with a sample of running water, to go with the acoustic guitar. Nearly fell asleep it was that relaxing. The whole band pick up the pace and get involved, all be it, a bit slower than what we have heard so far, but it works well to create the melody.  The song ticks over nicely, even mixing a few styles together to create the newer more instrumental harmonies.  This by far the most experimental, folk style song we have on the album, returning to the acoustic stages once more. Then changing up again, flirting with more pace.

Ana amazing album. I could listen to an entire album, or three with songs like this. It certainly has aspects of styles we have heard before, but they put their own twist own it to keep it original. A great release and I hope we can hear more from these guys for years to come. I hope that we hear a bit more experimentally, without the band losing their great sound. A few songs with something different would not go a miss. That is taking nothing away from this fantastic album.
