The Haunting of Silvåkra Mill - Rites of Passage

Malsten

The lengthy songs hit hard, and there are just enough of them. Any more, and they would overstay their welcome. The album has just the right balance between an immense weight, and subtle tension that can rise up and surprise the listener.

From Bandcamp, “Formed in 2018 with the purpose of creating conceptually driven slow and heavy doom music, MALSTEN garnered high praise for their debut album. Svart Records is proud to present the second chapter in that story, titled “The Haunting of Silvåkra Mill - Rites of Passage.” Blending elements from many dark corners within and beyond the genres of metal, MALSTEN music is innovative and thought-provoking—both musically and lyrically. They deliver a conceptual narration reminiscent of the dark theatrical sides of metal, and the folk horror-themed story revolves around an unfortunate soul succumbing to an ancient evil residing in a derelict mill.”

The album has six songs, and “Path of the Nix” is first. Depressing strings open the song, and a massive riff explodes that is impossibly downtuned. The vocals are clean, smooth, and even-keeled, but there are some odd melody bends in the song. “Larum” is another slow offering where the main focus is on the riff, and why shouldn’t it be? That is Doom Metal at its core. There is also a very ominous tone to the song, almost as if the end of the world is coming. It creeps up slowly, and before you know it, it is right in front of you.“Intercession” is a very short segue piece consisting mostly of organ notes, and it’s strangely calm.

“Terra Inferna” has slow and steady climb where the tension mounts, and that opening riff is massive. Each strike acts as a hammer to your head, but the vocals hit more softly, and the contrast is energetic. “Ceremony” is another short segue song with piano notes, and I am loving the diversity on the album. “Laurenti Birth” closes the album. It begins with clean guitar notes and a tension so thick, it fills the air you breathe. The riff lurks like a monster hidden in the shadows, and when the light comes around, it is so grotesque, you can scarcely look it in the eye. Overall, the lengthy songs hit hard, and there are just enough of them. Any more, and they would overstay their welcome. The album has just the right balance between an immense weight, and subtle tension that can rise up and surprise the listener.
