MALFORMITY have an interesting tale in the annals of Death Metal. They formed in 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia, at the peak of the rise of Death Metal. Of course, neighboring state Florida was one of the two hot beds back at that time, and the genre was its own beat at that point, breaking away from early pioneers DEATH and POSSEESSED, whose first offerings were still rooted in Thrash Metal and still finding their way to the genres forthcoming and true sound. They released a demo in 1995 titled "Black Holes to Heaven," and quickly disbanded, with individual members going on to other musical pursuits. They rose again in 2015 and released an EP "Lectures on the Apocalypse," which contained four tracks. In early 2018, Boris records released a 7" from the ban which they present now, titled "The Rapturous Unraveling," containing two new tracks.

A lot of time and a lot of bands have come and gone since the early days of Death Meta, yet it remains a genre very near and dear to many Metalheads. Let's take a listen to the two new tracks and see where MALFORMITY is today. "Rapturous Damnation" is about as brutal as anything that I have heard lately. A variety of riffs and meters drive the sound, with the Death vocals being about as deep and intense as you could imagine. It's very traditional in the sense of the genre borders, with a desolate sound, obligatory pig squeals and some noticeable bass lines provided by Snodgrass. There is some nice variety in this unrelenting song as well. "Unraveling" starts slower, with a prodding riff that digs deep into the trenches, awakening things buried in the darkness. Again the vocals really do a nice job of keeping the torturous sound alive, and they are adept at shifting the sound along the length of the track.

Though it's hard to judge an album from just two tracks, "The Rapturous Unraveling" is a bloody and meaty slab of old school Death Metal that consumes the listener with vile infidelity, pestilence, gore, and all things unholy. I have no doubt that the legions of Death Metal fans out there will welcome the two new tracks with fervor and excitement.
