Shallow Graves
Malfested
During the 80's, the Metal scene of Belgium was boiling hot. Names as ACID, CROSSFIRE, KILLER, OSTROGOTH, and many others called the attention to the scene of the country, but after 1985, things became frozen, and it seemed that nothing was left. But things just came into underground, and things were going well, and now, MALFESTED came to show that things are alive there with "Shallow Graves".
Their musical work is the old and good traditional form of Death Metal, with clear influences from old works from DEICIDE, ENTOMBED, EDGE OF SANITY (the early works of the band). Of course that such form of playing Metal was used time and time again, and the band's music isn't a new thing at all. But these beginners show guts and energy, and as they earn more musical experience, things will improve for sure. But it's good for now. "Shallow Graves" was produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Cyril Hostyn, who searched to create something that could be aggressive and allow the band to have a brutal impact and a crude approach. But at the same time, he used a modern insight to give definition to the sonority, to allow the songs to be understood.
"Shallow Graves" with its traditional speed and aggressive hooks (and a good set of grunts), "Masked with the Skulls of the Fallen" (that carries the same elements of the previous song, but with good contrasts between fast and slow parts, and with a simple and heavy work on bass guitar and drums), the slow and bitter tempos of "Fields of Bloodshed" (very good guitar riffs) and of "Cistern of Souls" are their best moments. This EP shows that MALFESTED is a promising name. So let's see what future will bring, but for now, listen to "Shallow Graves" and blow your ears to ash!
