Mercy Machine
Maggot Heart
When a band tries to use a nasty approach, it's a sign of someone missing the past. But the real idea about the music that was done years ago is that it was done on that way due many reasons, as technological limitations. But the passion for the past can bring some good works sometimes, as "Mercy Machine", from MAGGOT HEART, from Sweden. It's a mix between Post-Punk and nasty 70's Rock with something more. So the band's music has many hooking and melodic moments, but it's truly rough and nasty for many listeners. Obviously it's nothing something new at all, but in the way the trio works, all things are sounding in good shape. Yes, it's really a good release, but the band still has a way to go.
The band, along with Konie, produced "Mercy Machine". Koine made the mixing as well, and the mastering is signed by Alex Nagle. The sound quality is abrasive, nasty and really has that organic load from the past. But everything was done in a fine way, in a format that can be understood by the listeners without problems. The abrasive and intense instrumental work shown on "Second Class", the hypnotic melodies of "Sex Breath" (this one in a Punk/Rock 'n' Roll vein with charming guitars) and "Justine", the early Punk Rock scent on "Mercy Machine" (very good rhythmic work), and the introspective approach used on "Senseless" are the best moments of the album. But the idea that persists after hearing the album more times is that this trio can do better than is shown on "Mercy Machine".
The trio's musical work is good, but in such a scene full of many different names, MAGGOT HEART needs to improve things, because things are pretty tough in this musical genre right now.
