LOIMANN is an Italian band originating from Torino, Italy. The band has refined and evolved their sound over the years, as well as incorporating some lineup changes from the original inception. Originally more considered strictly a Stoner Metal band, they have now assumed a more Doom/Psych feel. Currently operating efficiently as a trio, the band's sound hits you hard, like a carefully executed left jab.

Make no mistake, LOIMANN as a trio create a surprising amount of sound. The music itself is expertly crafted, and wraps around you like a dense fog. Fabio, in addition to laying down oppressive guitar riffs and leads, provides vocals. Mostly presented in a "growl" format, Fabio sneaks in some effective clean vocals here and there, as well as some surprisingly fabulous harmonies. Completing the sonic assault, Dario and Enrico make up the rhythm backbone on bass and drums respectfully.

The nine track album opens with the heavyweight "Intro - Slaughterhouse N5" into "I Own The Rights To Tear Me Apart". The song opens somewhat slow and meandering with the intro before dropping into a chugging juggernaut, that absolutely feeds off of Enrico's drums. In addition to the sheer power of his playing, there are impressive fills that demand your attention. Not to be outdone, Fabio and Dario complete the sonic assault. It's a great example of a band hitting on that ever elusive "X" factor, where everything meshes just as it should. Each band member is comfortable taking a lead approach, and it's fun to hear it.

Following the opening track, the band falls into a comfortable rhythm having established the theme they were seeking. There are moments of sheer power, and moments of pure beauty. Often, as on "Mass Redeemer", the two distinctly different approaches come together incredibly well. This along with the somewhat unique harmonies create quite a paradox. LOIMANN at times sound familiar, but somehow manage to retain a definite sound all their own. There are lots of influences at play here. KYSUSS, MONSTER MAGNET, SABBATH and more.

I'd be interested to hear what non metal influences these guys have. There's something deeper than the usual name dropping bands influencing their sound, and it definitely makes for a unique approach. This was most apparent for me on tracks like "V.I.T.R.O.L." and "Living In Fear of Death, Dying In Fear of Life". I mean the song titles themselves drip with intrigue all while the music weaves in and out, accentuating the real magic happening here.

"A Voluntary Lack Of Wisdom" is a really a damn impressive album. LOIMANN have dropped a well produced, well played powerhouse album that definitely deserves your attention. I really dug it.
