Locrian - Rain Of Ashes album cover

Imagine, if you will, waking up in the morning. You walk into the kitchen and hear a pot of coffee brewing. You step outside and hear several different sounds: construction workers repairing and adding to a building nearby, cars driving by on the street, the distant sound of an airplane flying overhead. I could keep going but you get the idea. If hearing these noises in real life isn't enough for you, then Chicago's LOCRIAN was created just for you.

Their new album (EP?) consists of two really long songs, chock full of random noises...and stuff. From time to time I actually like bands that include sounds effects and long, drawn out, minimalistic compositions, such as AGALLOCH. However, what separates AGALLOCH from LOCRIAN is that actually includes memorable and discernable melodies. This is just random noise and even after several listens I would be listening and not even realize that the first track had ended and the second had begun. This is probably because there is absolutely no song structure whatsoever, one could just chop a section out of the middle and make it its own song and few would notice.

However, is this necessarily a bad release? No (not necessarily). At least they stick to their vision throughout the album rather than trying to have a crossover single with breakdowns and Metalcore vocals. I know that there are people that actually enjoy this type of...music. None of the album sounds sloppy or unprofessional, so it's not like this is just the result of some bozos in a recording studio with too much time on their hands. If my description of the band interests you, you are encouraged to check out their Myspace page. However, having derived no enjoyment out of this, I feel that I cannot accurately judge its quality, so I will leave it...

Locrian Lineup:
