Chicago, Illinois based three-piece Noise, Doom and Experimental Metal band LOCRIAN, have released a new full length album called "Infinite Dissolution", which is the follow up of 2013's "Return To Annihilation".
First song, "Arc of Extinction", immediately makes a statement of what they're all about. It starts a bit easy going, with a lot of electronics. You can imagine the choir of angels singing in the background. Then near the middle, some screaming vocals come in and the Noise elements come up. You can hear a lot of Post Rock elements as well. But it's clear from the start that they're all about experimental music. The song slowly builds up to a point where you expect total climax, and you won't be disappointed at the end of it. The mood has been set.
"Dark Shales" starts easy and slow as well, with some electronic effects and a little guitar riff, until the African sounding drums come in. Post Rock takes the upper hand again and you get swept away in the wave of sound effects and guitars that are just overwhelming. It pauses near the end only to drag you right back into its atmospheric depths.
"KXL I" is all the more weird and experimental. It's a little slower and sounds more ominous than what has come around before it. In the middle part, the noisy guitars come in at just the right time, and near the end it's all just noises and sounds, but somehow it all fits perfectly. "The Future of Death" then starts with thunderous drums and noises, but at least they make the sounds with their instruments and effects. And then it turns into something hauntingly beautiful.
"An Index of Air" is up next is more of the same, which in this case is a very good thing. More Noise and Post Rock blow you right away. This is what music should be all about, experimental, visionary and just great. "KXL II" is somewhat softer, like something you would ache to hear on a lazy summer day down by the shores of the river. The bird sounds help off course.
"The Great Dying" and "Heavy Water" keep the noise and the effects and the general atmosphere flowing until the final song, "KXL III", which is more of an outro song and the ideal way to go out. You'll be thunderstruck by this one. A masterpiece.
