Eis
Loather
From Bandcamp, "as the name suggests, "Eis" (German for "ice") is a rather chilling affair. After a prolonged period of silence following the last EP "Haganvelt" - riddled with difficulties ranging from pandemic uncertainty to line-up changes -the bands' first proper full-length album displays their growth in many ways. While it is not a concept album at heart, themes of loss and interpersonal struggle can be heard in the soothing voices and desperate screams strewn across the icy landscape." The album has six songs.
"Ephemeral" is the first. The opening tones are indeed slow and depressive, and the deep vocal echoes reflect the scene of the hopeless landscape. The song feels worse as it endures, as do the feelings of pain. "Holler Your Name" has a similar sound and feeling...that feeling of the noose around your neck tightening, when you didn't even realize it was there. This time, it's a combination of clean and harsh vocals that squeeze your soul. "Mortuary" begins with steady clean guitars, and that agonizing feeling still hangs in the background. When the main riff comes busting in, that rotten feeling in your stomach intensifies. The title track has more gut-wrenching tones that remind you of what you might hear as the world is ending. Much of the song is even-toned with clean vocals, and it drips with melancholy tones.
"Lost Sight" is the longest on the album; at eight minutes. It begins with heavy and aggressive tones, and vocal moans. The harsh vocals are absolutely harrowing. It waxes and wanes a couple times, before a horrid and hasty push to the end. "Proper Burial" closes the album. There is a slow build to a crushing riff that makes its presence known among the dead bodies strewn about. Overall, I found the album to be just as described in the opening paragraph...frigid, even icy, harrowing, and full of regret and struggle. I'm not sure if you would come out clean on the other side either. LOATHER is not here to paint you a picture of triumph either, but rather to remind you of the darker side of existence.
