The Second Strike
Lioncage
LIONCAGE formed in 2013. After two years of writing and recording, they released their debut "Done at Last" in 2015. "The Second Strike" is their latest effort, released in 2017, and contains eleven tracks. A slew of guest musicians helped them complete this project. Right out the gates the wonderfully melodic "Mysterious Angel" shoots feels straight up your spine. Thorsten has a full and rich voice with enough of an edge to keep the music excitable. Guitars, bass and drums work in unison, allowing his voice to shine through, delivering a memorable chorus. "Lights" has a bit of a funky soul, as I can finally place who Thorsten reminds me of a singer...it's a bit of Peter Gabriel for me. A hefty guitar solo rounds thing out nicely.
"The Other Side of the Moon" has an air of mystery from the chord progressions, as the moon does in the night sky. The thwart of the rhythm of the drums moves the song along its path. Piano makes presence a bit in "When Dragons Fall." Perhaps more than any other mythical creature, dragons represent power, grace, intelligence, and marvel. Though they could disintegrate you with one breath of air, when they die there is a part of you that mourns the loss of such a beautiful creature. I think that's what they are trying to capture in this song. "Let it In" has an upbeat piano melody that works with the guitar riff, and some groovy funk along the ride. "Secrets" takes advantage of some trumpet parts, like the great band CHICAGO often did. Some people think it doesn't have much place in a Rock song, but I say it just brings more to the party. The harmonies in the chorus are really strong.
"Colours" is led in by lead guitar, at that tone really reminds me of Daryl Stuermer. It has an affable sound and is very listenable, as I am imagining the joy of the band members writing and recording this little gem. "Save The Day" closes the album, with a speedy number fueled by guitars. Overall, this was a pleasing listening experience and a well-rounded AOR album that keeps a style of music at the very roots of what most of us at least began listening to alive. I think the strength of the album lies a lot in Thorten's vocals, but very much augmented by the backbone of a supporting band. It's the kind of album that just makes you feel good when you listen to it.
