Opus Daemoniacal

Limbonic Art

I don’t know how anyone could survive the onslaught of this album in their ears. The band presses the gas pedal down from the first note and doesn’t let up until the sound has long since passed. It just isn’t very creative.

From Bandcamp, “LIMBONIC ART are back. Their ninth full-length "Opus Daemoniacal" is black as a raven, fierce as a wolf, majestic as an eagle, and mighty as the legendary Norwegian black metal pioneers that mastermind, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Vidar "Daemon" Jensen founded in 1993 have always been. "Opus Daemoniacal" continues along the more straightforward black metal path that the Norwegian has chosen for his last release yet this album also deliberately harks back to the dense atmospheric and cinematic feel of LIMBONIC ART's groundbreaking early works.” “Ad Astra Et Abyssos” is the first song. Although the music isn’t necessarily proto-typical Black Metal, it is traditional in the sense of the melody that is created among the spider-web riffs, and the vocals and rolling drums are also traditional. “Deify Thy Master” is just a bit slower but the ever-presence of the drums still holds down much of the forefront, which is peppered with vocal shrieks and that infamous “wall of sound” that comes from the guitars. So far, this is pretty standard FWOBM madness. “Consigned to the Flames” is shorter, but no less intense, and the constant buzz that they have created in my ears just loudens. If you listen carefully, you can hear some nuances, but they are buried beneath the aggressive wall of riffs, vocals, and drums.

“Vir Triumphalis” rumbles forward with galloping drums and vocal screams, and at this point in the album, you know what you are going to get…pure aggression, without much thought. “I Am Your Demon” is another burner that just sets steps on the gas and moves forward as fast as it can, and some of the songs are starting to blur together because they have a similar sound. “The Wrath of Storms” begins with at least some variation…the rumbling of thunder. But once that sound hits, it hits hard again, and doesn’t let up. I get the aggression, but without thought, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. You have to vary its use for it to have the best effect in my opinion. “Ars Diavoli” closes the album, and it’s 12 minutes more of unbridled aggression and contentiousness. Overall, I don’t know how anyone could survive the onslaught of this album in their ears. The band presses the gas pedal down from the first note and doesn’t let up until the sound has long since passed. It just isn’t very creative.
