Book Of Lies

LIARS CULT are newcomers in the hardcore/metalcore genres, and have released their debut EP in the form of "Book of Lies". The band members aren't newcomers themselves, with ex members of BLEEDING THROUGH, MEAN SEASON, LOCKED UP AD and LOSE NONE.
At just three tracks, each under five minutes long, "Book of Lies" is a brief ride. Opener "Book of Lies" starts with a spoken-word clip related to Satan, with an odd-sounding vocal effect added. The mosquito-like drone note was somewhat irritating. While hardcore vocals don't need to be as slick as, say, traditional metal vocals, I found the vocals on this track to be simply off-key and not really characterful. Scott Danough and Jake Castro do some nice work on guitar though, bringing in some sinister riffs and a mournful solo backed by some interesting rhythm work.
I enjoyed the bass solo on "Curtain Call", which leads into the fray of a headbanging number. I thought that Tristan Ardelean's vocals worked better on this track, and the gang vocals were a good addition. The alternating tempos in the solo work added interest. Writing entertaining lead parts is one of the strengths of the album.
I felt that the drone note on "Har Megiddo" could've been lower in the mix. It grated on my ears somewhat in its current position. I felt that the vocals on this track were also better than those on "Book of Lies". This track was a catchy one, with a wailing solo early on. Mark Estabillo gives a forceful performance on drums throughout the album, and I felt that his parts were mixed well.
LIARS CULT is a band whose members have a strong pedigree, and is also a band with good potential. Their music has a great energy about it, and I can imagine this material doing well in a live setting.
