Favorites, Volume One
Legs Diamond

It hasn't been a long time since the Uncut Diamond (originally planned as the band's - then - fourth album, in 1980) reissue and Majestic Rock once again offers a fine Legs Diamond compilation for both the faithful followers of this underestimated U.S. Hard Rock act (two unreleased recordings) and unsuspected Had Rock fans who are unaware of the band's legacy in its - so far - nearly 30 years career. And there are lots of them out there. One more time, it was a smart move by this label.
Legs Diamond is the perfect example of a band that had all the standards to build a successful career worldwide. They did not, though. They had a good impact in the States (maybe in the wider North American area) but it wasn't what we could label as fame they came up with in e.g. Europe. In the vein of bands like early April Wine, Krokus and Deep Purple in their earlier days or Night Ranger, Foreigner, mid-period Blue Oyster Cult or late April Wine (sic) in their mid 80's to early 90's living, Legs Diamond fooled around all the way with great hooks, interesting guitar work and rough vocal melodies in such a way that it's a huge surprise they didn't make it. Being here and there, I myself had no longer any interest in their deeds 'till Uncut Diamond was released some time ago; it hit me like a rock with its raw energy and I began to dig again into the band's bio. That was the time when this compilation saw the light of day. So, they called it Favorites, Volume One...
Featuring tracks from the band's entire career (see the track listing for details) it's obvious that Legs Diamond did write some great melodies, some fascinating tunes and some attractive chords that could easily place them among top acts of that time. The passion of Walkaway, the rhythm of Rat Race (a real favorite), the approach of Woman (what a ballad...), the atmosphere of Rock Doktor or I Am For You... made me feel glad to be able to confirm that this band was just unlucky; Rick Sanford has an remarkable voice while Roger Romeo's guitar work really stands solid 'n' proud with the strapping Deep Purple meets Scorpions meets Whitesnake meets whatever-rules formula that persuaded you to bow - furthermore - to e.g. Aerosmith's, Kiss' or Led Zeppelin's decency.
The compilation's teaser - the two new recordings - are trustworthy (especially Loneliness). 'Nuff said.
Drivin' you nuts: it's a shame this band didn't climb up to where it definitely belonged being. This compilation explains why. I rest my case; if you like Hard Rock music composed between 1977 and 1986 (start counting albums in your collection) please step into the CD store and expand your memories/knowledge/requirements/impressions as regards driving Hard Rock. The deal is done and Town Bad Girl will set you on fire (again). If you 're a Legs Diamond fan, you must feel very lucky to be receiving two golden bullets in such short notice.
