A Plague in the Heart of Life
Leeches
As everyone knows, Black Metal arose from the depths of underground after some years being seen as dead and gone (maybe it can be said that it comprises the years between 1986 and 1991). But instead of what many can think, that it appeared only on Norway, it's not the truth. Many countries had Black metal acts, as Sweden, Finland, Brazil, and Greece. And the Hellenic lands that gave ROTTING CHRIST, NECROMANTIA, VARATHRON and others to the world is still a fertile womb for the genre, as LEECHES shows on "A Plague in the Heart of Light".
The band's musical work is just an Old School form of playing Black Metal. But it's not like their compatriots, because this trio uses as musical references the old, morbid and raw format used by names as MAYHEM, DARKTHRONE, IMMORTAL and others on their early days. And although it doesn't sound as something different, it has a darkened personal way of doing things, so it's good. The sound quality is what can be expected from a Black Metal demo: putrid, raw and nasty to the very bones. The volume levels changes between some tracks. But all of that can be pardoned, because this crude approach works for a demo, and their music can be understood, after all. For those used with recordings from the past, it will not be a problem, but something that is essential for such kind of musical work.
All the five songs are fine shots, showing a band that really has potential to be a great name in the future, and to teach the values from the old days. But for now, the morbid and brutal "Passage to Extinction" (very good tempos' contrasts), the sharp and fast "Luminous New Past" (this personal for of using shrieked voices is really very good), and the nasty slow parts of "A Plague in the Heart of Light" (where the guitar riffs are darkly seductive) are the ones that really show that, maybe, a new great name is arising from Hades' lands in Greece.
"A Plague in the Heart of Light" is that kind of release that makes the fans wait anxiously for an album. And LEECHES must consider such possibility for a new future.
