Tattoo Me
Lee Aaron
LEE AARON has been a Metal musician since the eighties. She was a really beautiful woman back then, and truth be told, she still looks stunning. Her music has always been Hard Melodic Rock, and that is one thing that has never changed. Late 2021 she even released a Christmas album which I reviewed. “Almost Christmas” was a game of two halves, with some good songs and some lesser ones. The latter being a number of the covers she did. The songs the band composed were just that bit stronger. In the whole the album got a mixed review by me.
Now she has released an album with only covers. So you understand that I am dreading listening to what is on offer on "Tattoo Me". Let me state that the voice of LEE AARON hasn’t suffered too much during her aging process, so still sounds quite strong. That makes listening to a full album a lot easier, as you never have to worry if she is going to hack it or not. The first four songs on the album, “Tattoo”, “Are You Going To Be My Girl”, “Even It Up” (HEART) and “What Is And What Should Never Be” (LED ZEPPELIN)start very promising. I would even go far as to say that these are as good as can be.
“Is it My Body” is an ALICE COOPER song, but has been given a MONTROSE feel. The thing is, it hasn’t saved the effort. It just doesn’t gel. Unfortunately there are a few more songs that shouldn’t have made it on “Tattoo Me”. The best (or is it worst?) example being “Go Your Own Way”. What a dreadful way to slaughter a very good FLEETWOOD MAC song. The other odd one out is “Malibu” (HOLE). It’s a lame version of a really poor song. Thankfully the really bluesy cover “The Pusher” corrects those lame efforts. I think NINA SIMONE would be extremely proud of this version.
Another song I need to mention is “Someone Saved My Life Tonight”(ELTON JOHN), which is a very lengthy song, and very tastefully covered by LEE AARON, although the very sweet-sounding backing vocals are a bit too mushy to my taste. Then you get to the last song, called “Teenage Kicks”. Well, this teenage should have been kicked off the record. What a disaster. And before you get mad at me for writing (typing) what I do, don’t forget, this is my interpretation. Yours could be completely different.
