An Astronaut's Diary
Ledmotiv
From their EPK, "LEDMOTIV is an Orchestral Metal band from Gothenburg: the metal and symphonic capital city of Sweden. The band was formed and took shape before and during the pandemic of Covid-19. With the desire to build a new and prosperous future for the metal industry and the symphonic scene, drummer and composer Viktor Hakan joined forces with guitarist Nils Leufvenius and vocalist Fredrik Vahlgren. The line-up revolves around this trio, and increases with live performances to make way for symphonic musicians. It is an orchestral metal band, with one goal - to combine worlds. METALLICA has tried it. NIGHTWISH has felt the taste. But no band have fully and fundamentally dedicated themselves to a metal symphony approach." The album has nine songs.
"Prologue" is the first. The opening tones are warm and melodic, followed by soft tenor male vocals. It sounds like the beginning of an opera to me. It isn't until towards the end where we get some electric guitars and orchestration. "The Man in Silver" has a jovial and upbeat melody with guitar as the main medium. Symphonic elements are also present, but they don' take over the music. You automatically have to admire the band's commitment, because this is a complex undertaking. "Master of Simulation" swells with rousing guitar and vocals, and has an energy that is infective. Listen to the complexity of the music here...it ducks in and out of various passages with surgical precision, yet it retains an accessibility that makes it easy to listen to.
"Pressure Still Around us in a Hollow" eases in with sensible tones and a slower pace, allowing each element to shine for a spell. It another rousing song that swells with crescendos and relaxes with smoother bits as well. "No Return, No Recovery" is a short segue piece that has a burning fast pace and clocks in at just over three minutes. There is a good deal of haste in both the music and the vocals, and take a listen to those fantastic lead breaks. "Acclimation" is a length 12-minute song, packing about as many emotional elements and crescendos as possible along the way. They are fully committed to this Metal opera. "Ignorance is Bliss" is yet another rousing piece that sees the engine behind this band continue to run, and run strong, burning fuel at an impossible pace but never running out. Again, more complex arrangements barrel at you but they are so easy to digest.
"Write between the Lines" closes the operatic tale. The hasty pace continues early on...almost as if the vocalist has been chasing something the entire length of the album that is just faster than he is and one step ahead. Oddly enough, the ending burns fast as well. Overall, this was indeed a fully realized Metal symphony. The trio were able to work in so many supporting elements that fit so well with the music it sounded completely seamless. The sheer amount of tracks they must have poured into the album is impressive as well.
