Slowly, I learn of more and more Black Metal and realize how different it all is in so many ways. When you turn on a Black Metal album expectation is Satan because there's nothing else you can expect, and even then the greats, IMMORTAL for example, don't even always (or ever sometimes) mention Satan. Not to mention Black Metal spans all sort of vocal ranges, King Diamond fronted band MERCYFUL FATE and Black Metal originators BATHORY have way different styles. Anyways, this album by LEBENSNACHT is more like the latter in that example, harsh vocals, continuous sort of basic drum patterns and not to over the top riffs. In Death Metal this would be sort of lame simply because bands don't keep it simple, Black Metal on the other hand I can find BATHORY and IMMORTAL influences easily and you can hear it but it's new and different almost like bringing "Bathory" and "At The Heart Of Winter" into one album. Not to mention the ambient sounds used to keep a flow between songs, I'm a big fan of that.
As a little back story, this is a one man band where Robert Brockmann does everything in the band and even runs the label. The album is about the belief of what comes after death. Brockmann explains it on the bands bandcamp page as "The encounter with your inner self in a undefined place, where darkness and light merge into one, where nothing is stable, where raging chaos and ultimate universal law unite into eternity." If I only had one song to suggest it would be "Blutmeer" this song is solid Black Metal at its finest, the first half the song has a BATHORY sound, but then it breaks into an "All Shall Fall" sort of bridge before going back. Not to mention in all of this there's some weird background instrument that I can't tell but it's either a synth or a flute and it makes the whole thing sound super majestic.
I want to talk longer but I think I given the gist of what to expect, there is not a single weak song on this album, it's full of obvious influences from some of the original bands and if you like Black Metal the hell, you gotta check out LEBENSNACHT's "Uudelleensyntyn Ikuiseen Pimeyteen;" it's a damn good release.
