Antarctica
Lark
What's for sure is that "Antarctica" is not a concept album, although its title song refers to the real story about Sir Ernest Shackleton's expedition, which happened over than 100 years ago. That's why the album cover includes the short introduction to the story and the basic details of it to allow the listener to capture the atmosphere of the song and the message. The album has ten songs.
"Mesmerize Me" is first. Choppy bass guitar thumps away in the beginning, while the riff is smooth. The vocalist has a well-trained voice, and stylistically, it falls somewhere in the vast spectrum between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. The title track also has some great bass lines, and it's evident that much of their sound comes from this instrument. This song has some melancholy and depressing tones, especially in the clean guitar interlude. The leads are also very well done. "Moment Traveller" has a bit of a heavier edge in the riff. Although the music isn't overly complex, it makes its mark know to the listener. Smooth tones are accompanied by a bite at times.
"Under a Cloud" has a more polished and despondent sound, almost as if the subject is lying on his back, looking up at the sky, and just spending the afternoon thinking about everything. "In Whose Name" is another depressive sound, and the doleful vocals do much to carry that sound. Over halfway through the album now, and the grind is starting to wear on me a bit as a listener. "The Hourglass" has a slower grind that involves some light symphonic elements. Although the song is heavier at times, the lamenting grind is starting to grow old for this listener.
"Time to Time" has some very strange chord progressions, and the vocals don't connect well with the music. It creates a disharmonious sound that is just not pleasing. "Deep in the Desert" closes the album. It has a bluesy ring to it, and an almost jovial riff. This is a bit better. It was hard for me to categorize the music on the album. But labels are just for those who are trying to gain a reference point. Bottom line is that this music was just too odd for me to connect with. There might be a market out there for this type of sound, but I do not know who that would be.
